Schedule an appointment for a one-on-one video consultation with Dr. Carlos Marciales today.

What to do before your procedure?

At your initial consultation with Dr. Marciales, you will discuss your medical history and receive a physical exam. He must be healthy and have realistic goals for his procedure. Dr. Marciales will make recommendations based on his expectations and general health. In some cases, a smaller procedure may be enough to satisfy the goals of it.

Explanation of the procedure:

breast lift , also known as a mastopexy , is a surgical procedure performed by a plastic surgeon to modify the shape of the breasts. During a breast lift, excess skin is removed and breast tissue is reshaped to lift the breasts.

You might choose to have a breast lift if you have sagging breasts or if your nipples point down. A breast lift could also improve your self-image and self-confidence.

This surgery will not significantly change the size of the breasts. However, it can be done in conjunction with breast augmentation or reduction surgery.

What can I expect from a breast lift procedure?

breast lift can be done in a hospital or an outpatient surgery center. Sometimes the procedure is done with sedation and local anesthesia to numb only part of the body. In other cases, general anesthesia is recommended, which makes you unconscious.

During The Procedure

Different techniques can be used to remove the skin from the breasts and reshape the breast tissue. The specific technique that the plastic surgeon chooses will determine the location of the incisions and the scars that are generated.

The doctor may make incisions in these locations:

  • Around the areola, the darker area that surrounds the nipples
  • Down, from the areola to the breast folds
  • Horizontally in the breast folds

The doctor may make incisions inside the breasts to reshape the breast tissue and, if necessary, reduce the size of the areola. This professional will remove excess skin from the breasts and move the nipples higher. The doctor will then bring the skin of the breasts together and close the incisions with sutures, surgical tape, or skin closure strips.

The procedure usually takes two to three hours, and you can go home the same day as the procedure.

Post Operation

After a breast lift, your breasts will likely be covered with gauze pads and a post-op compression bra. Small tubes may be placed at the incision sites to drain excess blood and fluid.

The breasts may be swollen and bruised for about two weeks. You will probably feel pain in the areas near the incisions, which will be red or pink for a few months. Numbness of the nipples, areola, and breast skin can last for about six weeks.

The first few days after  your breast lift , take pain medication as recommended by your doctor. Avoid tension, bending or lifting objects. Sleep on your back or side to avoid pressure on your breasts.

Avoid having sex for at least a week or two after your breast lift. Ask your doctor when you can resume your daily activities, such as washing your hair, showering or bathing.

Some tubes may need to be placed near the incisions, which are usually removed in just a few days. when dr. Marciales remove the tubes, he will probably change or remove your bandages too.

Talk to Dr Marciales about when your stitches will be removed, or if they should be removed. Some stitches dissolve on their own. Others need to be removed at the doctor’s office, usually one to two weeks after the procedure.

Keep wearing the post-op compression bra all day for three to four days. You can then wear a light compression bra for three to four weeks. Dr. Marciales may suggest the use of silicone or gel tape on the incisions to promote healing.

During the healing period, do not expose the breast area to the sun. Then protect your incisions during sun exposure.

Risks Associated with Breast Lift

A cosmetic breast surgery has several risks, such as the following:

  • scars.  Although the scars are permanent, they will soften and fade within one to two years. Typically, cosmetic breast surgery scars can be hidden under a bra or bathing suit. In rare cases, poor healing can cause scars to become thick and wide.
  • Changes in the sensation of the nipples or breasts.  Although sensitivity usually returns within several weeks, some sensitivity may be lost permanently. Erotic sensitivity is usually not affected.
  • Irregularities or asymmetry in the shape and size of the breasts.  This may occur as a result of changes during the healing process. Also, surgery may not be able to successfully correct pre-existing asymmetry.
  • Partial or total loss of the nipples or areolas.  Rarely, the blood supply to the nipples or areolas is interrupted during cosmetic breast surgery. This can damage the breast tissue in the area and lead to partial or complete loss of the nipple or areola.
  • Difficulty breastfeeding.  Although breastfeeding is often possible after cosmetic breast surgery, some women may have difficulty producing enough milk.

Like any major surgery, cosmetic breast surgery carries the risk of bleeding, infection, and adverse reactions to anesthesia. It is also possible to have an allergic reaction to the tape or other materials used during or after the procedure.
