What to do before your procedure?
At your initial consultation with Dr. Marciales, you will discuss your medical history and receive a physical exam. He must be healthy and have realistic goals for his procedure. Dr. Marciales will make recommendations based on his expectations and general health. In some cases, a smaller procedure may be enough to satisfy the goals of it.
Explanation of the procedure:
Breast reduction surgery , also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a procedure used to remove excess fat, tissue, and skin from the breasts. If you have large breasts, you may choose to have breast reduction surgery to relieve discomfort or achieve a breast size that is proportionate to your body.
Breast reduction surgery may also help improve your self-esteem and self-confidence and your ability to participate in physical activities.
What can I expect from a breast reduction procedure?
Breast reduction surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia, either in a hospital or an outpatient surgical center.during the procedure
During the Procedure
The specific technique used to reduce breast size can vary. The procedure may comprise the following:
- Surgery through incisions
- Liposuction to remove excess fat accumulated in the breasts
Typically, the surgeon will do the following:
- Make an incision around the areola and under each breast
- Remove excess tissue, fat, and skin from the breast to reduce its size
- Reshape the breast and reposition both the nipple and areola
The nipple and areola:
- They are usually kept in the breast
- If your breasts are very large, it may be necessary to remove the nipple and areola and relocate them to a higher position like a skin graft
The surgeon will try to achieve symmetry between both breasts; however, some variation in the size and shape of these is likely to occur. The size of the areola may also be reduced. Incision scars may fade over time, but they will never completely disappear.
Post Operation
Immediately after surgery:
- The breasts will be protected with a gauze dressing or bandage.
- A tube may be placed under each arm to drain excess blood or fluid
- Your surgeon may prescribe pain relievers and antibiotics to lower your risk of infection.
During the first days or week after surgery:
- Your breasts probably feel tender and sore
- They can also become swollen and bruised.
- Your surgeon may recommend an elastic compression bra at first to protect your breasts.
Then:
- You’ll need to limit physical activity for two to four weeks while your breasts heal.
- Your surgeon may recommend that you avoid underwire bras for a month after surgery.
The scars usually disappear over time. You will need to have a follow-up visit with Dr. Marciales to remove the stitches and monitor your recovery.
Risks Associated with Breast Reduction
Breast reduction surgery carries the same risks as any other type of major surgery: bleeding, infection, and an adverse reaction to anesthesia. Other possible risks are:
- Bruising, which is usually temporary
- Cicatrization
- Elimination or loss of sensation in the nipples and in the skin that surrounds them (areolas)
- Difficulty or inability to breastfeed
- Differences in the size, shape, and symmetry of the surgically altered left and right breasts, which may require another surgery to improve their appearance
